Renowned internationally as the "Asian Carving Genius," "Renaissance Man of Contemporary Art," and "Living National Treasure," Wallace Chan is a towering figure in the world of jewelry art. He is also known as the "fearsome Chinese man" among foreign jewelers!
WALLACE CHAN: HALF A CENTURY
Since the age of sixteen, he has been fascinated by gemstone carving. Over the past half-century, he has created numerous patented inventions, including: Wallace Cut (a phantom carving technique invented in 1987), the use of titanium in jewelry creation, a patented jade cutting and polishing technique, stone-inlaid stone craftsmanship, "Vacuum Wonders," and The Wallace Chan Porcelain, which are five times harder than steel. Time and again, he has revolutionized our understanding of jewelry creation (or pushed the boundaries of jewelry making / taken jewelry design to new heights).
The exhibition "Thousand Years of Thoughts: Wallace Chan - A Half-Century Retrospective of Jewelry Art" opened at the Shanghai Museum. This unprecedented artistic feast is a grand retrospective of Mr. Wallace Chan's fifty-year artistic career. His works engage in a dialogue that transcends time and space with selected collections from the Shanghai Museum, the Palace Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States, the Pforzheim Jewelry Museum in Germany, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in the United Kingdom. Through the three themes of "Carving and Carrier," "Chaos and Magic," and "Wisdom and Power," the exhibition presents a comprehensive and multi-faceted look at the artistic exploration and spiritual trajectory of this jewelry master.
